ADC - Analog Digital Converter

An analog-digital converter is a device that converts an analogue signal into a limited number of digital output codes.

The value of the analogue input signal has to be sampled at a sampling frequency of at least two times the highest frequency in the input signal. These samples are then converted into digital numbers.

This conversion will always give a rounding error. The rounding error can be kept sufficiently small by using enough digital codes. This rounding error is called quantization error or quantization noise.
