Short Range Devices

Short Range Devices (SRD) are radio devices that offer a low risk of interference with other radio services, usually because their transmitted power, and hence their range, is low.

Short Range Devices are used for a vast amount of applications, e.g.:

  • Communications over short distances
    • Cordless telephones
    • Medical implant communication systems
    • Radio Microphones
    • Wireless audio and video transmission
    • Wireless Local Area Networks
  • Security devices
    • Keyless car locking
    • Garage door opener
  • Telemetry, telecommand and telecontrol
    • Radio-controlled models and toys
    • Remote control
    • RF Identification
    • Remote control
  • Alarms
  • Monitoring, such as basby-minders
  • Proximity detection
    • Movement detection
    • Collision avoidance car radar systems
  • Industrial Scientific and Medical Devices (ISM)

Short-range devices in most cases operate on a license exempt basis. Generaly, they share spectrum with another (primary) radio service. Short Range Devices generally may use the band on the basis of two conditions:

  • They are not allowed to cause interference to the primary user;
  • They can not claimprotection from interference caused by other radio services.

There are a number f bands used for Short Range Devices. The primary bands that are available globally, are the 13,56 MHz (mainly used for RF ID), 40 MHz, 433 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz band.
